Learn how to display magnets safely on fridges, whiteboards, and other surfaces without scratches, residue, or damage.
Quick answer
To display magnets without damaging surfaces, use felt or rubber pads on the back of each magnet, avoid sliding them across the surface, and clean both the magnet and surface regularly.
Why magnets can damage surfaces
Magnets often have a metal or hard plastic backing that can scratch painted or stainless steel surfaces. Dirt and grit trapped between the magnet and the surface act like sandpaper, leaving fine scratches over time. Humidity can also cause rust or adhesive residue if the magnet has a glued-on pad.
How to display magnets safely
- 1. Add a protective backing: Cut a small circle of felt, craft foam, or adhesive rubber pad and attach it to the back of each magnet. This creates a soft buffer that won’t scratch the surface. Check that the backing is clean and free of debris before sticking it on.
- 2. Clean the surface and the magnet: Wipe the display area with a microfiber cloth and mild cleaner to remove dust and grease. Do the same for the magnet back. Any grit left on either will cause scratches when you place the magnet. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbers that could dull the finish.
- 3. Place, don’t slide: Set the magnet down gently on the surface and press it flat. Never slide or drag it across the surface, as this grinds trapped particles into the finish. If you need to reposition, lift the magnet completely and place it again.
- 4. Rotate magnets periodically: Every few weeks, move magnets to a different spot. This prevents any trapped dust from creating a permanent mark and also spreads wear evenly across the surface. Use a soft cloth to wipe the old spot before placing a magnet there.
- 5. Remove and store when not in use: If you swap out seasonal or temporary magnets, take them off the surface and store them in a dry, padded box or drawer. Leaving them unused on the same spot for months can trap moisture and cause rust or staining. Wrap each magnet in a soft cloth or bubble wrap to protect the face and back during storage.
Product facts
- Morels 3" Magnet: The Morels 3" Magnet from Starfangled Press has a printed ceramic face and a flat metal back. Because the back is bare metal, placing a soft felt or rubber pad between it and your fridge prevents scratches and helps the magnet stay put without sliding.
